General Skilled Migration

The key aim of the Australia Government’s General Skilled Migration Program is to allow skilled, qualified and job ready independent skilled migrants to work and meet the needs of the Australian labour market.

Skilled worker applicants can use their qualifications, work experience and language ability to meet the Australian immigration requirements. A points test is done for qualifying skilled applicants. Further details to the Points System are available here[SS1] .

The current list of relevant Visas (with subclass) includes:

  1. The Skilled-Independent (subclass 189)* Visa is a permanent residence visa for the eligible skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia.
  2. Skilled - Nominated (Subclass 190)* Visa  is a permanent residence visa for  skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia after being nominated by any Australian state or territory government agency.
  3. Skilled - Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) (Subclass 489)* Visa is a temporary residence for skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in specified regional areas in Australia for four years.

*The applicants eligible for visa sub classes 189, 190 and 489 need to submit an online expression of interest as the primary step. Based on the points scored, the qualifying candidates will be invited through Skill Select to apply for the main application.

  1. Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485): lets applicants live, study and work in Australia temporarily after they have finished their studies (meet the two-year Australian study requirement, have recently graduated with either an eligible qualification or with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (SOL)). Students are only able to access the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant.
